SPOTLIGHT ON . . .  the ones that didn't make it (so far)

NOT all the sites that were advertised as locations for new homes lived up to that promise. This one, in one corner of the car park at Morrison's supermarket in Nantwich, was originally planned to be a four-storey block of 10 flats - as I revealed here. That was in August 2007.   

   After the site stood empty for a while, black hoardings were placed all round it. Were the flats being built discretely behind it? Not at all. Eventually signs appeared on the hoarding announcing the prospect of office accommodation of between 500 and 6,700 square feet, with lift access, secure parking and access to Hospital Street.

   But there didn't seem to be a demand for offices either. In August 2010 the site is still untouched. Whatever happened to the much heralded need for more housing?

The estate agents' sign on The Cheshire Cheese pub in Crewe Road refers to a public auction in April 2010. The public house, the board suggested, was to be a four-bed dwelling and nine new build apartments to the rear (left of the picture).

   In February 2009 there were suggestions that the pub was to become an Indian restaurant - an idea opposed by Nantwich Town Council but backed by the (then) Crewe and Nantwich Borough Council.

The former JobCentre between Nantwich railway station and Station View was originally planned to be a three-storey block of nine two-bed flats (2005) and then 14 apartments (2008). Neither option has come to fruition up to August 2010.

This one is still on the cards. The Palms Tropical Oasis at Stapeley Water Gardens will be closing with the land being used as the gardening centre while the rest of the site becomes a housing development. At least that is the plan . . .
