HOW did you do? The answer to Andrew's question is: it's a hollowed-out log used as a water pipe from just after the Great Fire of Nantwich of 1583.

   Townspeople used the old way of carrying water in buckets to put out the various blazes in that episode of the town's history.  

   This picture shows the area where the water pipe was unearthed. We are looking through an archway into Hospital Street.
