NANTWICH has won the Best Town award in the North West in Bloom competition for the fifth year in succession - and the seventh time in all.

An excited Doug Butterill, Chairman of the Nantwich in Bloom Committee, rang me on the evening of October 23 to give me the news. He and NiB committee members and volunteers had been to Southport Theatre and Convention Centre in the afternoon for the ceremony.

There are so many awards to be handed out that only winners are invited, so the NiB contingent knew they had won something, but not exactly what. The "what" turned out to be the Best Town in the North West award, for which Nantwich won the Preston Silver Dish.

Although it is not part of the award's title, this is for medium size towns. The best large town award went to Colne and the best small town award to Garstang. For the full list of awards, visit the North West in Bloom website.

Joining Doug in the delighted party were Connie Jones (Secretary), David Smith and Sue Hughes (Committee members), Margaret Lavin, Charmagne Jones and Penny Butterill (volunteers).

The silver dish and the accompanying certificate will be on display at David James, the Crown Mews jewellers.

Guide's centenary to be marked

IT has been announced that the theme of the flower bed on The Square in 2010 will be the 100th anniversary of Girlguiding UK (founded as the Girl Guide Association). The design will incorporate the movement's Trefoil. The local Guides will be planting a tree in the Riverside to mark their centenary.
