Hedges cut
August 2007: I NOTICE that the hedges that were masking
the signs have been neatly trimmed and it is now possible to read the
directions more easily. Except, that whoever cut back the hedges appears
to have been a little wary as they approached the sign and there is
still some greenery in front of the wording. But it is much better. I
would like to think I had something to do with that - but it is more
likely to have been routine maintenance.
Lorry free
November 2007: Welsh Row is all set to
become lorry-free after a decision by Cheshire County Council's highways
and transportation committee voted in favour of a plan to send lorries
of 7.5 tonnes and over around the Waterlode inner ring road.
The agreement, reported in the
Nantwich Chronicle of November 7, is seen as a way of saving the River
Weaver bridge from destruction by the heavy vehicles.
Residents now have 28 days to
voice their views. The committee was told of the wishes of the Welsh Row
Action Group to have road narrowing, a cycle lane plus trees and shrubs.
Work begins
January 2009: Work has begun on the £300,000 project to improve Welsh Row. The street will be
closed off in sections over a 10-week period during which footpaths will
be re-laid and widened, together with some kerbs being dropped and
"tactile paving" being installed at side roads. There will also be two
new priority give-way points. Lorries will be banned with a 7.5-tonne
weight limit being introduced and sign directing heavy vehicles around
the Water Lode inner ring road. The work will be funded by Cheshire
County Council in one of its last acts before it disappears on April 1
under reorganisation of the local authorities set up. |
